Introduction

This document describes how to update HP Jetdirect firmware. Similar to service packs for operating systems, HP provides firmware updates for printers, MFPs, and Jetdirect Print Servers to help address any known issues and add new features throughout the support life of the device. To make sure the Jetdirect Print Server is up to date, HP recommends updating the firmware.

note:
The recommended method for upgrading the embedded Jetdirect Inside firmware is to use the printer RFU. See the printer documentation for assistance, or download the printer firmware package at www.hp.com/go/support.

Overview

There are several supported methods to perform a firmware update on an HP Jetdirect depending on whether you are updating a single print server or multiple print servers at one time.

This document provides instructions on how to update the firmware for multiple Enterprise print servers at one time using either the HP Download Manager or HP Web Jetadmin.

For instructions on how to update the firmware for a single Jetdirect Print Server, go to Update Firmware for a single HP Jetdirect Print Server using JetDirect EWS or FTP.

Use only one of these methods to automatically retrieve, download, and install the appropriate files from the HP Web site for multiple Jetdirect Print Servers at one time when connected via a network when the printers are in a ready state.

In most circumstances, HP Web Jetadmin is recommended to update multiple print servers at one time.

If the print servers are on a network that does not have Internet access, you can use a laptop with internet access to download each of the firmware files individually (from the links provided in this document), download HP Download Manager or HP Web Jetadmin, and then take the laptop to the network where the print servers are located to perform the firmware updates.

note:
A few HP Jetdirect models cannot be updated. In this document, only those HP Jetdirect print servers that can be updated are listed. If an HP Jetdirect model is not listed below, it is because it cannot be updated.

What you need to know

Before performing a firmware update, review these requirements:

Image file downloads for HP Jetdirect Print Server Firmware are embedded on this page. Use Ctrl+F to find your Jetdirect model below and download each individually, or use the steps below to automatically find and download the firmware from the internet using either HP Download Manager or Web Jetadmin.
A firmware update can require 5 to 10 minutes or more to complete depending on the speed of the computer and the connection speed and type to the printer network, and any print jobs pending in the printer queue.
The firmware update process requires a local network connection and internet access from the printer and/or computer.
Access to some menus might require administrator privileges or a passcode.

Update the firmware

Use only one of the following methods to update the firmware of the print server. If the printer is in an error state, resolve the error first.

Method one: HP Download Manager version A.04.30

HP Download Manager can automatically download firmware files from the Web and use the images to update an HP Jetdirect Print Server with flash memory.

However, rather than have HP Download Manager automatically download those images, you can follow the instructions below to download firmware images manually. To use these downloaded firmware files, use HP Download Manager's "Local Mode" instead of "Internet Mode" when HP Download Manager is launched. (Be sure the download files are in the correct directory before launching the HP Download Manager.)

Step one: Download the firmware to the Jetdirect subdirectory

If not already installed, click here to download HP Download Manager software.
Download the firmware files manually one at a time, or have HP Download Manager automatically download those images.

To automatically download the firmware, follow these steps:
1. Make sure that you are connected to the internet.
2. Open the Download Manager (DLM) and click Internet Mode.
3. Wait for the DLM to build the firmware catalog.
4. See Step two: Update the firmware.
To manually download the firmware, follow these steps:
1. Press Ctrl+F, paste or type your Jetdirect model number, and press Enter to find your Jetdirect model in Jetdirect Firmware Downloads section below.
2. Right-click the .dld file name in the links below, select Save Target as or Save as.
3. From the Save in: drop-down, select a location on the workstation running HP Download Manager version A.04.xx in the subdirectory: \Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Download Manager\Upgrades\Jetdirect, and then click Save.
  
  note:
  This assumes that the default directory was chosen during installation of HP Download Manager. These firmware images must be saved to the above subdirectory in order for HP Download Manager to successfully use them to update HP Jetdirect firmware.
4. Repeat the steps above for each Jetdirect model.
5. Open the Download Manager (DLM) and click Local Mode.
6. See Step two: Update the firmware.

Step two: Update the firmware from HP Download Manager

Select Automatic discovery, and then click Begin Discovery.

note:
If you select Custom discovery, you can use the IP addresses, the host name, or the hardware address to update a single Jetdirect Print Server. You can also use this option to update only devices on a specific Subnet.
Wait for the DLM to discover all devices on the network.
In the Discovery Report dialog, click Yes, and then click OK to start the update now for all devices.

note:
To schedule the update for a later time, select the option Schedule upgrade to start at, type the date/time, and then click OK.
Wait for the DLM to update the Jetdirect Print Servers, and when the Firmware Upgrade Results dialog displays, click OK to view the upgrade results folder.
Expand the Upgrade Results folder and then resolve any failures or devices that require manual intervention.
- For any devices listed in the Manual Intervention subfolder (under Successful Upgrade), manually turn off and then on the print server to make sure the firmware update takes effect.
- For any devices listed in the subfolders under Upgrade Failure, try again to update the firmware.
  - Security Failure folder indicates devices that require that an SNMP community name is set to be upgraded. Set an SNMP community name and then try again to update the firmware.
  - Invalid Firmware File folder typically indicates that the Jetdirect upgrade file on the hard disk is corrupted.
  - Unable to Communicate folder indicates that the communication between the Jetdirect and the DLM was interrupted. Try again to update the firmware.

Method two: HP Web Jetadmin

HP Web Jetadmin (WJA) can automatically download and import firmware files from the Web and use the images to update an HP Jetdirect Print Server. You can also manually download the firmware from the links in this document, and then import the firmware files into Web Jetadmin.

HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 SR4 or newer can be used to update the HP Jetdirect firmware remotely over a network for multiple printers at one time when the printers are in a ready state. These steps should only be used if the printer is able to boot to READY.

Step one: Download and import the firmware into Web Jetadmin

If not already installed, click here to download and install HP Web Jetadmin.
Connect the client machine to the internet and to the network.

note:
Only the client machine needs web access through a browser.
Start Web Jetadmin 10.2 SR4 or newer.
Download the firmware files manually one at a time, or have HP Web Jetadmin automatically download those images.

To automatically download and import the firmware into Web Jetadmin, follow these steps:
1. Under the Device Management section in the left pane, click Firmware, and then click Repository.
2. Press Ctrl+ click on each printer that you want to update, and then in the upper right side of the screen, click Get images.
3. Press Ctrl+ click on each printer that you want to update, and then click Next.
4. Select the check box Import firmware images, and then click Done to download the firmware.
5. Locate the Jetdirect Print Server(s) in the list, press Ctrl+ click on each device that you want to update, and then click Next to import the firmware into the Web Jetadmin repository.
To manually download and import the firmware files into Web Jetadmin, follow these steps:
1. Press Ctrl+F, paste or type your Jetdirect model number, and press Enter to find your Jetdirect model in Jetdirect Firmware Downloads section below.
2. Right-click the .dld file name in the links below, select Save Target as or Save as.
3. From the Save in: drop-down, select a temporary location on the workstation that is running Web Jetadmin where you can easily locate the file.
4. Navigate to the Web Jetadmin firmware repository and use the Import feature to import the firmware images into Web Jetadmin.

Step two: Update the Jetdirect firmware from Web Jetadmin

Open Web Jetadmin.
Update the firmware from Web Jetadmin for multiple Jetdirect Print Servers at one time.
1. Under the Device Management section in the left pane, click All Devices.
2. Select the Jetdirect Print Server(s) to be updated and then click Next.
3. From the Device Management section, click All Devices (or click a device group), and then press Ctrl+ click on each print server that you want to update.
4. In the lower half of the screen, click the Firmware tab, press Ctrl+ click on each print server that you want to update, and then click Upgrade.
5. Compare the current version of firmware installed and newer versions available, select the recommended version or select Skip from the Newer version drop-down list for each printer, and then click Next.
  
  note:
  This step can also be used to check the current version of firmware installed and newer versions available.
Wait for the updates to complete and the Jetdirect Print Server(s) to reboot.

note:
Do NOT turn the printer off during the update process. When the update process is complete, the device will automatically reboot. If the firmware update process fails, or is interrupted for reasons such as a power outage, it can be completely recovered by running the firmware download again and reinitiating the download. Web Jetadmin will display a notification with information about the failure and a link to retry the process.
