How do I decide between the t200 Zero Client and the t150 Zero Client?
The HP t200 Zero Client for MultiSeat is the latest generation product which provides improved performance and allows configuration of more clients per host PC than the HP t150. The t200 can connect to the host PC via Ethernet, which allows dramatically greater distance between the client and the host PC compared to connections via USB.
With t200 Zero Clients, how do I decide between USB or Ethernet connection to the host PC?
The main consideration is the distance required between the clients and the host PC in your environment. The USB cable specification maximum length is 5m (or roughly 16ft.) With Ethernet, the clients can be 100m or more (when using switches) from the host PC. Using Ethernet connections can also reduce cable clutter around the host PC. A USB connection may be desirable for its simplicity of setup and for locations where Ethernet networking is not possible.
How many stations should I configure on each host PC?
The ideal number of stations per host PC is directly related to the types of activities expected to occur simultaneously on the stations in normal use. Please refer to the Application Intensity chart. A pilot or trial run with the expected activities and applications is recommended.
Do I need to externally power my Zero Clients?
In most cases, you will need to provide external power to your Zero Clients. If using Ethernet-connect t200s, you must use external power. If daisy-chaining USB-connected Zero Clients, you must use external power. For USB-connected Zero Clients, external power is optional, but, without external power the client can only support the keyboard, mouse, and one low-powered USB device that is rated to use 100mA or less. This includes some USB flash drives, but most current devices require more than 100mA.
How do I externally power my Zero Clients?
There are two methods to choose from when external power is required: A power-pass-through monitor can be purchased, such as the HP le1851wt monitor which provides external power to t150 and t200 Zero Clients via an included power cable connected to the back of the monitor. Therefore, only one AC power outlet is needed to power both the monitor and the Zero Client. Otherwise, an AC adapter which plugs into the wall can be purchased separately.
Can I mix t150 Zero Clients with t200 Zero Clients?
Connecting t150/t100 clients and t200 clients to the same host PC at the same time is not supported. It is OK, however, to use t150/t100 and t200 Zero Clients in a multiple host PC environment, as long as each host PC is using only one type of Zero Client.
Can I mix Ethernet-connected and USB-connected t200 Zero Clients?
Yes. USB-connected t200 Zero Clients and Ethernet-connected t200 Zero Clients can be used on the same host PC.
Can other users see or access files on my USB flash drive?
With Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 or greater, a USB flash drive inserted into a Zero Client will be visible and accessible only to the user on that Zero Client station. A USB flash drive connected to the host PC will be visible and accessible to all stations. What options do I have for networking when using Ethernet-connected t200 Zero Clients?
The host PC and the t200 Zero Clients must be assigned IP addresses for the solution to function. The simplest arrangement is to connect the host PC and the t200 Zero Clients to a router (which will assign IP addresses to them.) Network switches can be used to multiply the number of host PCs and Zero Clients which can be connected. A full network infrastructure can alternately be used for network environments containing DHCP and DNS servers. In this type of environment, it is important to keep in mind that the host PC and its Zero Clients must exist on the same network subnet.
How do I obtain HP drivers and software when using a Volume License version of Windows MultiPoint Server?
HP has developed the HP Install Assistant to make this process smooth and simple. Obtain the Windows MultiPoint Server install DVD from Microsoft, but before installing it on the host PC, click the "Support & Drivers" link on HP.com, click on "Drivers and Software" and search for your host PC model (e.g. ms6200.) Choose your OS, then locate the HP Install Assistant Softpaq and download it. You will not need to download the other individual driver and software Softpaqs. Running the Install Assistant Softpaq will unpack the files to your hard drive. Carefully follow the instructions in the provided PDF file to transfer the files to a USB flash drive. Now, insert the USB flash drive into the host PC and install the OS from DVD. The HP drivers and software will automatically be installed and configured during the installation of the OS!
