Rated 1 out of 5 by from Avoid it like the plague You'll see from the polarised online reviews of this machine that you're either lucky (at least initially) and get a good 'un, or like me, you receive a lemon. You should also note that many of the positive reviews on HP's website are from The Insiders, which is one of those freebies-for-reviews Influencer websites. Mine was essentially DOA - out of the box it claimed that it had a paper jam despite never being used, and would not recognise any paper in the trays. Apparently this is a known issue with these printers - some little sensor or widget goes belly-up - and can occur during shipping or at a later date. Worse than receiving a dead printer was HP's response. I think they must feed their support staff Slow Pills. Once you manage to get hold of a support tech, you'll spend many joyless minutes on a video call proving that they've sent you a dud ("Pull this out, shine your torch there, push these buttons, access this secret menu, paint me like one of your French girls, Jack"). Then, there'll be crickets for days before someone else decides that they might send someone to collect the paperweight. After a week, HP still hadn't arranged a definite date to collect the dud, so I gave up and bought another brand locally. If you're feeling lucky and want to take a chance on this thing, I'd recommend buying it locally and not have to rely on HP direct's dire support. You should also note that HP (despite several lawsuits) continue to engage in the anti-competitive practice of locking out non-HP cartridges. They will actively update the printer firmware remotely to disable compatible cartridges on a continuous basis. They euphemistically call this 'dynamic security' presumably because dangerous animals or bitcoin scammers hiding in printer cartridges are a known problem. From the HP website: "This printer is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and it uses dynamic security measures to block cartridges using a non-HP chip. Periodic firmware updates will maintain the effectiveness of these measures and block cartridges that previously worked." Not an issue if you, like me, tend stick to original toner, but it's not a practice I support, and there's nothing to stop HP continually ramping up toner prices once you;re locked in.

The printer wants to steer you towards HP paper selection (eg for photos), but it prints on generic paper just the same.

In accordance with Instructions that came with the printer, Updated Firmware to latest version immediately after printer taken out of the box, installed latest Driver. Printer was printing fine from 2 different Windows networked devices. Then after a few weeks, failed to print intermittently - various errors with Error Codes not listed on HP Support website. Same issue as noted in https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Unanswered-Topics-Printers/random-errors-on-4301-color-laser-F0-03-0F-03-and-F0-01-04/td-p/8870935/page/2. Installing HP Smart Universal Printer Driver Version 3 as noted in the above article, also resolve the issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MFP 4301fdw is a perfect choice for your home office Required a colour multifunction printer for home office to replace my old Kyocera. Was considering the HP M480f but as this model was not available anywhere I spoke to HP direct who were very helpful and advised the new version was the 4301fdw. I set up an account with HP online, ordered and paid for it in one go and it was delivered within 48 hours - amazing! It was extremely straight forward to set up on my Windows 11 computer and the HP Scan software is intuitive and easy to use. I also set up the HP Scan Assistant using my SMTP Server details so that I can scan multiple jobs directly from the HP printer to my computer in a few easy steps - this is a massive time saver for me. Overall the printer is small, quite and fast. It is easy to use and the print and scan quality is excellent. I'm extremely happy with the HP 4301fdw :)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nothing but headaches! First few goes out of the box, printer was fine. All downhill from there. Appears to have lots of firmware and software incompatibility issues with HP Easy Smart Pro app as well as Android phone app. I have never been so frustrated trying to scan/print a document. As someone in my mid 30's, I consider myself pretty computer literate. Password details for printer don't allow me to sign in. Have had to use USB to print documents as no connection to my portable devices. Scanning works on glass, not on the document feeder.... list goes on. This is the first negative review I have ever written. Please help!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great mfp printer I was deterred in buying this printer by the previous reviews suggesting the setup would be difficult, if not a nightmare, but i am pleased to say the process was simple, quick and complete. I am running WIndows 11. The hpsmart desktop app quickly identified the printer and its printing / wireless scanning capability. Brochure print quality is excellent, scanning swift. A recommended buy.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Printer software failure out of the box I have had the printer for 2 weeks. When it works it works great. Finally I gave up and called HP Tech support today. The specialist spent over an hour trying to fix the software. Eventually he also gave up. Did a full factory reset and then installed the HP Universal software. Everything suddenly worked, including printing from my iPhone! The setup process is tedious at best. After installing HP Smart software, which is definitely not very smart, you must update the drivers. With other brands a very simple process. Not so with HP Smart. The app simply takes you to the HP website instead of doing the searching for you (even though it knows what model you have). The HP website then provides a list of over 10 drivers for this newly released printer. However I had no way of knowing which software I actually needed. After down loading all of the available updates the printer did the following: 1. Went offline every time my laptop was shutdown, requiring a re connection to the WiFi. 2. Would not prInt from any mobile device (iPhone, iPad). 3. Would not auto detect which tray had paper installed. 4. Insisted on paper being loaded manually via the manual feed instead of tray 2. 5. Seperate scanner software needed to be down loaded. My OS is Windows 10. My first experience with HP printers and software, after many years of ease with EPSON, Canon and Brother printers. These other manufacturers bundle software updates together. They make it so much easier for a new install. Only 1 download needed and everything installed in sequence. So much better than the HP installation process. Very disappointing experience fir a top if the range Laser printer

Why is it not made clearer that the 4301DW does NOT support duplex scanning whilst the 4301FDW does. Thought that I did not need the fax function so the DW would be OK for me. Very disappointed that I now have a printer that scanning is now a chore.
