The Omen laptop is a good choice for gaming and video editing/multimedia.I would have given this a 5 star review but because I suspect that I did not get the best deal I gave it 4 stars. This is more of a reflection on the HP decision makers when it comes to pricing deals rather than the Omen itself.
After I purchased this particular Omen I found other deals were offering a 1TB SSD (mine is 500GB) and an i9 processor (mine is an i7) and a later version NVidia graphics card for similar money.
I expected that HP would have given me a better discount (I paid AUD$2,474) because this Omen was an i7 with only 500GB SSD. While I appreciated the EOFY discount I am certain some of these discounts are not offered at a low enough price relative to other discounts for the same model (Omen) but different configuration. So to some extent we rely on HP to ensure that all discounts are proportionate and relative to similar offerings for the same computer model. I felt that I could have got a better deal on another Omen if I looked around a bit more.
My lesson here was that I should have done more comparisons and more searching for the best possible deal as I now understand that even HP may not make all their discounts reasonable when compared to similar deals. Some some deals are great and some deals are not so great. My deal in my opinion was not so great, but the Omen is a great laptop from a technical perspective and my deal was still good value.
I am more than happy with the Omen anyway, I just feel a little short changed, but the Omen I have will still exceed my needs (mostly video editing but still want the grunt for gaming) because it is one powerful laptop. Overall I would by an Omen again as my first choice but would be more vigilant on the cost vs the configuration and would have paid a little more for the i9 with a 1TB SSD and later version NVidia.
Some reviews have stated that the laptop lid is a little too flexible and could vibrate when on a plane. I think this might be true if there is turbulence in which case a flexible lid is a good thing and you would not be using the laptop during turbulence anyway. So I do not agree that a flexible lid is a bad thing. I think is a good thing and I don't fly often anyway and even if I did I about the lid would wobble during normal flight.
Other reviews claim the lid is make of plastic and the body of aluminum. I cannot tell. If this lid is plastic it is definitely a high quality plastic. I personally am not that concerned as it is high quality but I understand while some people will feel that aluminum is a superior material. But in my opinion a good quality plastic resin is fine and nothing to fuss about.
To sum up, I felt that HP could have discounted this laptop even more given that is it an i7 and not an i9 processor, it is a 500GB SSD and not a 1TB SSD and the nVidia card is an older generation. But whatever configuration you buy the Omen is still the best choice in my opinion if you want to gaming and/or video editing/multimedia.
