Introduction to Sustainable Print and Packaging Solutions
At HP, sustainability is integral to our approach in the print and packaging industry. We are committed to increasing energy efficiency, circularity, and waste reduction across our operations and empowering customers to do the same. Our ambition? To drive transformative change by enabling greener practices for businesses, communities, and the planet.
Let’s learn more about HP’s strategy to transform printing and packaging production for a sustainable future.
Print Sustainability as a Driving Force
The print and packaging industry finds itself at an inflection point driven by sustainability goals. Consumers increasingly demand eco-friendly prints and packages. Brand owners aim to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Our client's printers and converters serve these brand owners while relying on equipment, substrates, and software providers that enable production.
It's time to accelerate action. HP plays a critical role through groundbreaking technologies and creative collaboration that will transform and decarbonize print and packaging. Our approach centers on three pillars as we deliver on our commitment:
Pillar 1: Optimizing daily operations with energy-efficient machinery, renewable energy, and reduced waste.
Pillar 2: Pioneering circular design of prints and packages to keep materials circulating.
Pillar 3: Partnering across the value chain, from raw materials to end-of-life, to drive collective impact.
Pillar 1: Driving Everyday Optimization
Printers and label converters are critical partners for brands to deliver on their sustainability goals. HP equips them with end-to-end solutions optimized for eco-friendly production.
Our industrial printing presses like HP Indigo and HP PageWide enable reduced energy and ink use through automated digital printing. Advanced ink innovations also cut waste, empowering the use of sustainable substrates.
For example, Incapto, a producer of coffee products moved its coffee pouches to HP Indigo to support its sustainable packaging goals. The flexible print process enabled customization while reducing packaging waste versus traditional coffee capsules. This drove positive consumer habits and strengthened Incapto's eco-friendly brand image.
To enable more recyclable and compostable packaging, we also collaborated with a sustainable packaging provider, Rootree. Using HP Indigo Electro Ink on compostable packaging materials, Rootree boosted sustainability and cemented its market position in the sustainable packaging market.
Partnerships like these showcase how optimizing everyday printing operations can advance sustainability across packaging value chains. HP solutions pave the way.
Pillar 2: Reduce, Reuse, Renew: Enabling Circular Design
To advance sustainability, we embed circularity across our solutions - from R&D to manufacturing to services.
First, our manufacturing equipment is built to last through durable design and upgradeable platforms. We incorporate 12% recycled plastics and metals and innovate to reduce environmental footprints.
Next, we boost efficiency for customers. The HP PageWide Advantage 2200 with High Efficiency Drying cuts energy use per page by up to 60%. Meanwhile, HP xRServices enables remote troubleshooting, reducing travel emissions, upto 800 kg of CO2 if you were to fly down a field support engineer to the site.
Finally, HP take-back programs re-manufacture presses, BIDs and service parts, and recycle supplies. In the last few years, over 100 Indigo presses and 35 PageWide Presses were refurbished, reusing 90% of parts and saving more than 60% in CO2 impacts.
This lifecycle approach allows us to collaborate with customers on reducing waste through circular design and renewable operations.
Pillar 3: Going Beyond: Driving Sustainable Change, Together
While greener products and services are crucial, true transformation requires industry-wide collaboration across the print ecosystem.
The HP Amplify Impact program enables us to collaborate closely with partners across the print production ecosystem to drive sustainability at scale. We launched this pilot initiative to help suppliers, channel partners, and customers optimize their environmental performance by tapping into HP's extensive knowledge base, data, training, and resources.
For instance, we provide training workshops focused on topics like energy management, materials innovation, and carbon accounting. Partners can access HP sustainability experts and tools to conduct assessments and identify high-impact areas for reducing their footprint. We share best practices gleaned from our own sustainability journey.
We also empower customers to measure and cut emissions with tools like the HP Print Job CO2 Calculator. And by leveraging technology and partnering with suppliers, we drive down CO2 throughout our supply chain to achieve our targeted 2030 50% reduction goal.
Our ambition extends beyond our walls to the world's threatened forests. With initiatives to conserve and restore forests through our Forest Positive 2030 goal, we take accountability for every page printed.
The path to a sustainable future in print and packaging is a shared journey. It will take continued innovation, transparency, and cooperation across the value chain. HP is committed to driving this collective impact. But no single company can bring the sweeping change we need alone. True transformation will come when we work as one.
