Companies leading the charge in eco-friendly recycling

04/01/2023

At HP, we're committed to creating a sustainable future by reducing waste and embracing eco-friendly practices. We're proud to work alongside innovative recycling companies like TerraCycle to drive positive change and inspire others to follow suit. Together, we're proving that with a little ingenuity and a strong commitment, virtually everything can be recycled.

Everyone is familiar with their local recycling program, however, many of them only accept a limited number of products, which means a lot of what we want to recycle still ends up in a landfill.  It doesn’t have to be that way. There are products you can buy and programs you can subscribe to that make it easier to recycle and reduce your personal carbon footprint.

One of these programs is HP's Instant Ink. This unique subscription service delivers new ink cartridges to our customers while ensuring their old ones are responsibly recycled. Since 2016, we've recycled more than 962 million ink and toner cartridges, keeping them out of landfills. But it’s more than that. The cartridges themselves are made with recycled materials, including more than 5.5 billion plastic bottles and more than 143 million plastic hangers. Talk about a commitment to recycling.

HP is not alone in this effort. Companies and brands like Colgate, Gillette, and BIC have developed a range of products that are designed to be easier to recycle for consumers. And many more have created recycling programs directly. Baush + Lomb accepts used contact lenses and packaging at more than 7,000 outlets across the U.S., MAC Cosmetics consumers can return six empty cosmetic containers and receive a free lipstick as a thank you, and H&M’s Garment Collecting program makes it easy to bring unwanted clothes in for recycling, no matter the condition or the brand.

TerraCycle's CEO, Tom Szaky, understands the importance of these efforts to consumers, noting that they “really care about the environment and about the products they buy." It’s important for companies to make recycling a priority. As Szaky puts it, “everything can be recycled, converted into another life, back into itself, or something different.”

By designing products from recycled materials and through innovative programs like HP Instant Ink, and many other, companies like HP are helping to create a more environmentally responsible world, one recycled product at a time.
