AT vendor Blue Orb succeeds with DSPP resources

HP has a Development and Solution Partner Program (DSPP) that is aimed at hardware and software partners who develop solutions based on HP technologies or products. DSPP offers many services designed to help our partners develop products that are more compatible with HP platforms and bring those products to market faster and at a lower cost. DSPP also helps our partners market and sell their products.

There are more than 50 assistive technology vendors (ATVs) that are members of DSPP. Many of these companies are quite small, and they enjoy the benefits and resources that a large company like HP can offer.

One ATV that used the lead generation services provided through DSPP is Blue Orb, Inc. Walt Wilson, COO of Blue Orb, says his company had a very successful campaign and he “absolutely” would use this service again.

Blue Orb began developing its lead generation campaign with an HP-recommended third party vendor in spring of 2005. Blue Orb designed key message elements for the mail pieces to be sent out and helped with audience selection. The vendor then tailored the campaign to Blue Orb’s needs, even including a Blue Orb reseller in the program. Together the companies established a tightly targeted audience for the mail campaign.

The results were “terrific,” according to Wilson. The response rate was approximately 25 to 30 percent, and it generated a significant number of good sales leads.

“The vendor coordinated, managed, implemented and measured our campaign in a first class manner,” says Wilson. “The whole program was extremely well run.”

HP and Microsoft jointly promote assistive technology on Vista

Are your AT products Microsoft Vista-ready? HP and Microsoft are teaming up in several ways to promote a number of third party assistive technology products that are already available on the new Vista platform.

When previous Microsoft operating systems (e.g., Windows NT, Windows XP) were launched, the availability of AT products often lagged behind the OS by many months. This meant that a person who was accustomed to using AT on his computer could not upgrade to the new OS platform because his AT wouldn’t work on it. For the Vista launch, Microsoft and HP helped to close this gap by offering a porting lab and other assistance to our AT partners. The goal was to have a significant number of AT products available to run on Vista at its launch in late January.

At the ATIA show in January, HP and Microsoft co-sponsored a “passport” raffle that encouraged show attendees to visit a group of 18 AT vendors and get demonstrations of the new products. This approach was very successful and well received. More importantly, it showed the attendees that many AT products are ready for use on Vista today.

At the annual CSUN show in March, HP and Microsoft shared booth space and featured a number of solutions for people with disabilities and for the elderly. Several AT partners took turns in the booth to showcase their new offerings, again demonstrating that AT products are available on Vista-based computers from HP.

“Assistance” is a critical technology value for the next decade

A new study from the Washington, DC-based research and consulting firm Social Technologies concludes that technology-related products and services will increasingly be shaped by 12 underlying principles, or “technology values.” These values -- such as simplicity, efficiency, and personalization -- represent the characteristics that consumers will look for in products, services, and technologies over the next 10 to 15 years.

The report cites “assistance” as one of the 12 values, concluding that consumers will turn to assistive technologies to help them bolster and extend their natural abilities. The need is partially driven by demographic changes such as an aging population, as well as the fact that consumers are bombarded with more tasks, choices, and information that may require assistance.

HP is continually working to make our products simpler and easier to use. “Accessibility” is one of our core design principles. At the same time, we look to you -- our assistive technology partners -- to extend the usability and value of HP platforms through your innovative solutions. Together we can reach a broader market of consumers who are looking to improve their computing experience.

The HP Assistive Technology Partner Program provides you with the resources to help develop your product and bring it to market. Here are just a few ways that HP can support your product development, marketing and sales:

  • Your product can be listed in the index of assistive technologies that HP recommends to customers.
  • We may be able to sell your product directly through the HP online store.
  • We can feature your solution in a case study on our website so that potential buyers can learn of the benefits and value of your solution.

Cash prizes to be awarded to students designing assistive technology

Engineering students are being recruited to enter a competition aimed at designing new assistive technology. First prize $5,000, Second prize $2400, and a Third prize $1200, will go to undergraduate students who successfully create a prototype of a new assistive technology/tool that enables people with cognitive disabilities to accomplish activities of daily living more effectively and independently.

The design competition is being sponsored by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for the Advancement of Cognitive Technologies (RERC-ACT). The contest is funded by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) in cooperation with The Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities.

Letter of intent to enter the contest was due Thursday Feb. 1, 2007 and a prototype is due Friday, June 1, 2007.

Design submissions will be judged by RERC-ACT participants, including persons with disabilities, engineers and computer scientists, cognitive disability specialists and assistive technology vendors.

Gadgets for the Golden Years

Think the high-tech market of the future is just teens, tweens and twenty-somethings who want their iPods smarter, their Xboxes faster and their cell phones thinner? Consider this: in the next 10 to 20 years, 78 million baby boomers in the U.S. will reach ages when health care is a worry. That sizable number--and the billions of dollars it represents in potential sales--has sent companies scrambling for technology to help seniors cope with the infirmities that come with aging while maintaining their autonomy.

Time magazine offers a preview of some of the fascinating gadgets currently in the works.
