New HP “ultraportable” notebook PC is an ideal platform for AT

HP recently announced a new ultraportable computer with a small form factor that is an ideal platform for AT vendors developing accessible mobile solutions or solutions for the education market.  The HP 2133 Mini-Note PC packs the power of a full-fledged personal computer into a device about the size of a hardcover book.

Starting at 2.63 lb (1.19 kg), the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC is designed to go where you go without weighing you down.  The computer measures 1.05 (at front) x 10.04 x 6.5 inches (33 x 256 x 165 mm).  Many laptops measure more than 15 inches wide (381 mm) by 11 inches (279 mm) deep, and similarly priced models can weigh as much as 9 pounds (4 kg).

To reduce size, the device's keyboard is 92% of the size of a normal keyboard – noticeably smaller but still big enough for most people to type comfortably.  The Mini-Note is encased in a full metal case for protection and durability.

Prices start at a $499 (USD) for units running Linux and $599 (USD) for those running Microsoft's Windows Vista.

The small form factor and light weight of this full-featured PC make it an ideal platform on which to build accessible solutions.  Learn more about this remarkable new PC.

HP co-sponsors ATA History Exhibit

HP was honored to co-sponsor the AT History Exhibit at the Alliance for Technology Access (ATA) Gala Dinner held on the 14th of March 2008 in Los Angeles.  Timed to coincide with the annual CSUN conference, the Gala commemorated the 20th anniversary of the ATA, whose members have assisted millions of Americans with disabilities to access the assistive and accessible technology that enable them to turn their dreams into realities.

The History Exhibit displayed 200 years of technology achievements in assistive technology and showcased many of the products that HP, Microsoft and our AT Partners developed over the past 20 years.

ATA is currently working on creating the AT History Exhibit to be a permanent fixture. If you feel like you have a unique, relevant item to donate, please contact Lindsay Iserman at lindsayiserman@ataccess.org.  Visit the ATA Web site if you would like to find out further information on the Alliance for Technology Access.

Did You Know…?

There are 650 million people living with disabilities (PWDs) worldwide; 50+ million live in the United States; 30+ million live within the European Union countries.

The U.S. PWD Economy consists of:

  • $300 billion spent annually on goods, services and activities specific to their disabilities
  • $1 trillion in purchasing power
  • $135+ billion in discretionary income
  • $13.6+ billion on travel in 2004

Research shows that U.S. persons with disabilities are highly motivated to spend money in areas that significantly improve their quality of life.  Adults with disabilities spend, on average, twice as much time online as adults without disabilities: 25 hours per week compared to 10 hours per week.
