The surprising link between girls' education and climate action

04/01/2023

Here at HP, we're passionate about the power of education to shape a sustainable future, and we know that empowering girls is a game-changer. Research has shown that educating girls is not only about achieving social justice; it's also a surprisingly effective way to tackle climate change and protect our environment.

Project Drawdown, a renowned climate change solutions organization, discovered that educating girls ranks as the sixth most impactful solution out of 100 to combat climate change. So, how does this work? When girls receive a quality education, they gain the confidence and knowledge to make informed decisions about their lives, families, and communities. This has a domino effect, leading to benefits for the environment and supporting sustainability efforts. In fact, according to Project Drawdown, educating girls and family planning would reduce carbon by 85 gigatons by 2050.

Girls who have access to education are more likely to join the workforce, earn higher incomes, and choose to marry and have children later in life. This often results in smaller, healthier families with the resources to invest in their children's education and well-being. In turn, this helps slow population growth, easing pressure on our planet's natural resources and reducing climate change impacts.

But that's not all! Educated girls grow up to be environmentally conscious adults. They're better prepared to grasp the complexities of climate change and more inclined to adopt eco-friendly practices, support green policies, and even drive clean technology innovations.

“Women are at the center of climate impacts,” says Ndivile Mokoena, project coordinator of Gender CC South Africa, part of a global network of activist organizations called Women for Climate Justice. “Our resilience needs to be built around women.” Focusing on education will not just help women but whole nations, she says.

At HP, we're committed to making a difference by promoting education for girls as part of our wider sustainability initiatives. Through various programs and partnerships, our goal is to provide access to quality education, digital skills, and resources for millions of students around the globe. By investing in girls' education, we're not only fostering a fairer world but also building a greener future for everyone.
