Empowering women in the workplace

5 actions for inclusive and equitable environment

March 2, 2023

Creating an inclusive and equitable work environment is not only vital for upholding the values of diversity and social responsibility, but it also drives business growth and innovation. Research has consistently shown that companies with diverse workforces and inclusive cultures outperform their peers. Gender diversity in the workplace, in particular, leads to better decision-making, increased productivity, and higher employee engagement.

At HP, we're committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace for everyone, and we know that empowering women is an essential part of this journey. Drawing on the insights of HP's Global Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Brittany Masalosalo, we've identified five key actions that companies can take to create a more inclusive environment for women.

  1. Provide equitable opportunities for growth and advancement: Ensuring that all employees have access to professional development opportunities, mentorship, and support is crucial in creating an equitable workplace. Companies should actively work to eliminate gender bias in promotions and invest in the growth of female employees.
  2. Implement inclusive policies and practices: Establish policies that support work-life balance and create a family-friendly environment. This may include flexible work arrangements, parental leave, and childcare support. By accommodating the needs of all employees, companies can promote a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture.
  3. Address unconscious bias: Providing training and resources to help employees recognise and overcome unconscious bias can contribute to a more equitable work environment. Encourage open conversations about diversity and inclusion, and challenge stereotypes to create a culture that values all perspectives.
  4. Foster a sense of belonging: Create opportunities for employees to connect, collaborate, and build relationships across different levels and functions. This can include networking events, employee resource groups, or mentorship programs that encourage a sense of community and support among employees.
  5. Celebrate and recognise women's achievements: Regularly acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of female employees, both internally and externally. This not only recognises their hard work but also inspires and motivates others to strive for success.

By implementing these five actions, companies can make significant strides towards creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace for women. At HP, we believe that empowering women in the workplace is not only the right thing to do, but it's also essential for fostering innovation, growth, and long-term success. Let's work together to build a more inclusive and sustainable future for everyone.
