Jane’s Green Hope
HP is joining Jane’s Green Hope, an initiative of the Jane Goodall Institute in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant, protect and restore Earth’s forest. Global forests are disappearing, but together we can bring them back to life. Making this real requires ongoing care. We support this by:
- Ensuring native tree species are planted for a thriving ecosystem
- Empowering local communities to lead local forest stewardship
- Caring for and monitoring the growth of threes to ensure healthy habitats
Where the trees are planted
Washington State Lands
Through a partnership with the Washington Department of Natural Resources, replanting efforts are focused on providing forest resiliency for areas affected by disease and insect damage, improving habitat for the endangered northern spotted owl, and ensuring healthy and diverse mixed-species tree stands.
Oregon Archie Creek Fire
In 2020, the Archie Creek Fire blazed through Oregon. The original forest mix, including douglas fir and red cedar, will be planted to not only provide nesting, a roosting habitat for the threatened northern spotted owl but also provide streamside shade and reduce sedimentation in area creeks where threatened Coho salmon are found.
Madagascar Lemur Habitat
The Arbor Day Foundation's partnership with Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership is focused on reversing the destruction of forest habitat that is home to critically endangered lemurs and other wildlife species found nowhere else on Earth.
Brazil Amazon Rainforest
In the face of deforestation and devastation, the Arbor Day Foundation is dedicated to helping restore indigenous lands in the Brazilian Amazon. This work will provide food security and income alternatives for thousands of indigenous people while contributing to conservation efforts and helping mitigate climate change.
West Virginia Monongahela National Forest
Some areas acquired over the years by the U.S. Forest Service are reclaimed mine lands that weren’t properly restored. Working to replant native red spruce stands in those spaces will provide much-needed critical habitat for a variety of endemic and migratory wildlife — including the Cheat Mountain salamander, northern flying squirrel, and golden-winged
Florida Econfina Creek and Chipola River Water Management Areas
In 2018, Hurricane Michael destroyed thousands of acres of timber in Florida’s Econfina Creek and Chipola River watersheds. Planting longleaf and slash pines will restore native groundcover to the area. Longleaf pine trees in particular will resist water beetles, better tolerate wildfire and wind events, and require less water.
