Over the last two years, the healthcare system has battled the global pandemic while the healthcare industry is also working to solve other problems—leveraging technology to make medical care more accessible, improve diagnosis and treatment, manage increasing demand, and combat burnout among staff. Healthcare systems are also looking for ways to increase efficiency, improve operations and add value while also reducing their costs.
Medical device manufacturers are employing several emerging technologies to help healthcare providers deliver better treatment more efficiently. In addition to 3D printing medical devices , they’re also utilizing robotics , virtual reality, and the Internet of Things to enhance capabilities and transform how they identify, diagnose and treat disease.
3D printed medical equipment and devices
3D printing was already being used by medical device companies. The first 3D printed orthopedic implants were approved by the FDA nearly a decade ago. But in addition to 3D printed implants, there have been many other successful applications across a wide spectrum of medical device classifications.
The pandemic demonstrated that FDA-approved 3D printed medical devices could alleviate supply chain issues and increase speed-to-market. Personal protective equipment such as ventilators and nasal test swabs were ideal use cases and helped validate the technology as a production solution for the medical industry.

Everex enjoys new design freedom with 3D printed medical equipment
Everex is an Italian engineering company that focuses on producing instruments for in-vitro diagnostic analysis. One of their devices, Hemo One, was originally manufactured using traditional methods including milling, lathing and sheet metal fabrication. These techniques limited their options for part and component design. With HP Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing technology, they were able to design a new instrument that featured fewer parts and easier assembly. The result was a lighter weight product that can be delivered more quickly.

3D printing medical devices give Brinter a competitive edge
Brinter is a Finnish bioprinting company that provides 3D printed medical equipment for the MedTech industry. Brinter’s machines are unique to the industry because they are highly modular and offer multi-material printing capabilities. Utilizing HP’s MJF, they were able to design and consolidate parts for better performance with less assembly. In addition, the new parts were printed with installation markings, which helped eliminate the need for assembly instructions and labels. Along with the design changes, Brinter is enjoying other benefits, including faster speed-to-market and a sustainability advantage.
