Rated 5 out of 5 by Tim.M from A solid laptop that is affordable and durable The HP laptop series offers exceptional value for the money, particularly the 1040, 840, and 640 models. Having extensive experience with these models in both high-budget hospital environments and non-profit primary care facilities, I can confidently say that the 1040 series has been my go-to choice for many years. These laptops were the preferred option during my five-year tenure at a hospital, where budget constraints were less of an issue, allowing us to invest in the reliable and high-performing 1040s. In my current role at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), budget considerations are more stringent. While the 1040s remain a top choice, their higher cost led me to explore more affordable alternatives. The 640 series, although functional, lacks the premium feel and durability of the 1040s. The casing feels cheaper and less robust, though they still perform adequately without major complaints. The 840 series strikes an excellent balance between cost and durability. These laptops have proven to be resilient, surviving drops and rough handling by providers. Despite occasional exposure to food crumbs and smudges on the screens, they continue to function reliably. Imaging these laptops with a custom deployment server is straightforward, provided the correct NIC driver is used. One area for improvement is the keyboard replacement process. On newer models like the G9 (I think this is where the follwing observation stated) and above, replacing a faulty keyboard requires a complete teardown of the laptop, including removing the motherboard. This is a significant inconvenience compared to older models, where keyboard replacements were simpler and quicker, minimizing downtime, allowing me to do this myself in about 20 minutes. Now I have to send these to HP for repair to avoid voiding the warranty. Overall, aside from the keyboard replacement issue, which is more of an inconvenience than a major problem, HP laptops have consistently delivered reliable performance and durability over the past decade. They remain a solid choice for both high-budget and budget-conscious environments.

Rated 1 out of 5 by glo29 from Had to send it back Had issues from the get go. After setting it up, realized it would turn off after about 1 hour of continuous use (basic Microsoft software use). Ran regular and advanced diagnostics (likely the battery) but could not get technical support as hp did not recognize the serial number on the machine (and it was bought directly from hp). Wasted a lot of time trying to get if fixed only to have to return it. Waiting for a new machine to see if this was a one off or not.

What pen is compatible with this laptop?

Asked by: Xinwei Zou
Thank you for your question! No, the HP EliteBook 840 14-inch G11 Notebook PC does not feature the necessary tablet mode to make it compatible with HP Active Stylus Pens. This will still be compatible with passive stylus pens. Like the active stylus, you can tap or write directly on a screen with a passive stylus (also called a capacitive stylus). But unlike an active stylus, the passive/capacitive stylus doesn't have touch sensitivity or electronic components. There's no communication between the stylus and the device.

What is typical battery life?

Asked by: BobMk
Thank you for your question! The typical battery life on an HP EliteBook 840 14-inch is up to 15 hours and 15 minutes. As with all batteries, the maximum capacity of any battery included in the HP Hardware Product will decrease with time or use, and the battery cycle life will vary depending on product model, configuration, loaded applications, features, use, wireless functionality, and power management settings.
