What is TerraJet Toner Cartridge Technology?

Since the very first at-home printers were introduced to consumers around 30 years ago, HP has been at the forefront of printer innovation. All these years later, that hasn’t changed. From hardware to software and everything in between, we’re still dedicated to improving the performance and reliability of all our printing solutions.
On March 23, 2023, we introduced our latest breakthrough in laser printing technology: TerraJet toner cartridges. Delivering up to a 27% reduction in energy use and made with up to 78% less plastic, these cartridges deliver the quality and performance you’ve come to expect from HP while leading the way in sustainability and energy efficiency.
Wondering how we managed to produce the most sustainable, highest-performance toner cartridge ever? First, it’s important to understand how toner cartridges work.

How do toner cartridges work?

How do toner cartridges work
Consumers have commonly turned to inkjet printers for their at-home printing needs. As the name implies, these printers dispense liquid ink onto a page, forming an image.
The laser printing process is significantly more complex, so you might not be familiar with exactly how laser printers work.
Instead of using ink, laser printers use toner, a powdery substance made of granulated plastic and various other materials. Toner carries a negative electrostatic charge.
Inside the printer, there is a photosensitive drum that is given a positive charge. When a file is sent to the printer, a laser scans the drum and selectively removes the positive charge in specific areas. The printer then applies toner to the drum. The negatively charged toner is attracted to the positively charged areas on the drum, creating the desired image.
The image is then transferred from the drum onto negatively charged paper. The paper goes through heated rollers that permanently fuse the toner onto the page, and finally, the printed page is released into the output tray.

Benefits of toner

Laser printing offers numerous advantages. Firstly, although laser toner cartridges may have a higher initial cost compared to ink, they have a longer lifespan, resulting in a lower cost per page. High-yield toner cartridges can print thousands of pages before replacement, making them more cost-effective in the long term.
Furthermore, laser printers have higher page-per-minute (ppm) rates, allowing for quick and efficient printing of large volumes of pages within minutes. They excel in producing sharp, well-defined characters, particularly for black-and-white text documents, as toner doesn't bleed into the page.
Laser printers provide consistency and reliability, making them an excellent choice for small business owners as well as for home offices or dorm rooms.

Cartridges and the environment

The unfortunate truth about printer cartridges, both ink and toner, is that if they're not handled and recycled properly, they could have a significant impact on our environment in a number of ways.
For example, incorrect disposal of cartridges can lead to environmental pollution through the release of toxic substances into the soil and water. The plastic components of cartridges, if not recycled, contribute to the growing problem of plastic waste and landfill congestion.
Additionally, the manufacturing of new cartridges requires energy and resources, further contributing to carbon emissions and resource depletion.
These are the issues that HP set out to address. Our answer? TerraJet toner cartridges.

What are TerraJet toner cartridges?

During the Amplify™ Partner Conference, HP announced its latest printing solutions, including several laser printers that are compatible with our new TerraJet toner cartridges. Here are three ways that HP TerraJet technology is changing the game in performance and sustainability.

Reduce

One of the most important goals HP had when designing TerraJet cartridges is the reduction of new plastic during the manufacturing process. By designing smaller, more ergonomic cartridges and using recycled material, TerraJet cartridges use an average of up to 28% less new plastics than comparable predecessors. Plus, if you rely on HP Managed Print Services to set up and maintain your printer fleet, that number increases to an average of 32% less new plastic within a 60-month contract period.
Additionally, all TerraJet cartridges are made up of 35% recycled plastic, whether you use HP Managed Print services or not.
But we didn’t stop there. We went a step further and redesigned the packaging itself, which now uses an average of up to 78% less plastic - 82% over 60 months for managed printers.
Most importantly, TerraJet ink cartridges are free to recycle through our HP Planet Partners program, which provides drop-off and collection services for your old HP ink or toner cartridges. Thanks to HP Planet Partners, more than 1 billion original HP ink and toner cartridges have been recycled so far.

Perform

The next important consideration we made when designing TerraJet cartridges is energy efficiency. When you reduce the amount of energy you use in the office, not only do you help save the planet - but you save money, too.
The laser printing process requires heat to adhere the toner to the paper. This step typically requires the most energy. That’s why HP TerraJet toner cartridges are filled with specially formulated toner with a low melting point, and they use an average of between 17% and 27% less energy than comparable predecessors.
What’s more, this energy efficiency comes at no cost to performance. In fact, HP TerraJet cartridges provide long-lasting color consistency, cutting down the time it takes for color calibration. Plus, TerraJet-enabled HP Color LaserJet printers feature 25% faster print speeds when compared to the previous generation. All that adds up to a lot of saved time and energy!

Protect

Security might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to your printers. But because they’re more powerful and versatile than ever before, they also represent a potential backdoor into your network.
When you use HP printers and genuine HP ink and toner, you can rest easy knowing your valuable data remains safe and secure. HP cartridges feature tamper-resistant firmware to prevent modification or the infection of dangerous malware.
Plus, HP takes care to ensure that our office cartridges are secure every step of the way. ISO/IEC 20243 certification ensures product integrity throughout the entire supply chain. That’s on top of the tamper-evident packaging that all HP cartridges are shipped in.
Finally, HP Wolf Security offers comprehensive network and hardware security options for HP products in your fleet.
