Recycled HP cartridges find new purpose:
"Print Chairs"

Children in Colombian school

Thousands of children in Colombian schools are forced to study while sitting on old chairs or even on the floor, according to government reports. With inadequate infrastructure and resources, there are often more students than chairs and many existing wooden chairs have broken down after years of use. Without something as basic as a place to sit, school attendance suffers.

The Program and Partnership

HP saw an opportunity: to both repurpose used plastic and provide a critically needed supply for local schools by creating durable, recycled chairs using ink and toner cartridges.

The chairs are a result of a new recycling hub in Colombia and our partnership with Recupera Tu Silla Foundation, allowing us to transform used, original HP ink cartridges into chairs for schools in communities around the country.

María Angélica Sánchez, Director of the Recupera tu Silla Foundation explains, “The transformation that HP makes in these remote areas is not only about bringing a chair made of recycled plastic. The profound change really consists of these children improving their self-esteem based on the merit of a safe and dignified space to study. They also improve their educational process and therefore school absence rates are reduced.”

"Because these schools are located in remote and rural communities, support is limited," says Paloma Cavalcanti, HP's Global Head Sustainability Customer Success. Recognizing the gap in education due to lack of resources, it provided us an opportunity to find a creative and sustainable solution to bridge this divide. Using our recyclable materials, we were able to tackle the challenges students faced with the creation of durable, recycled chairs from our cartridges.

Cavalcanti reflects on the impact on education, adding that “while it is something as basic as a chair, it brings hope to these students and gives them the opportunity to change their reality."

Together, we have transformed more than six tons of plastic into more than 600 chairs and are committed to continue transforming plastic waste to allow students to thrive. Over the next year, HP will continue to work with the Recupera Tu Silla Foundation and the Colombia Military to deliver more chairs to students across Colombia, doubling our impact and reach.

Our Impact
