HP EliteBook Laptops: A Complete Review

HP EliteBooks are some of the thinnest and most powerful laptops around.
Coworkers Using HP EliteBook Laptops
Built with the business power-user in mind, this line of notebooks works just as well in the home office as it does in the cubicle. These computers are designed for improved network security and come with collaboration features like noise canceling and crisp sound for recorded conference calls to make your Skype sessions a breeze.
Are you considering purchasing an HP EliteBook laptop? If so, you should know that while every model is “elite,” there are some fundamental differences between them.
Find out which computer is right for you with our complete guide.

HP EliteBook 700 series laptops

At the entry level, we have the HP EliteBook 700 series. These notebooks are made for the mainstream knowledge worker, such as those who use programs like Excel and Word and spend the bulk of their time online.
You have the choice of the HP EliteBook 735, HP EliteBook 745, or HP EliteBook 755 models. Depending on the generation you choose, you can then opt for such features as enhanced security, additional processing power, and similar upgrades.
While the HP EliteBook 700 series offers the lowest prices in the HP EliteBook series, don’t think these computers are underpowered. They can be customized to have all of the latest components including:
  • AMD® Ryzen APU processor with options for overclocking
  • Up to 32GB of RAM (in the G5 models)
  • Full High Definition (FHD) screen
  • 720p HD webcam
They’re also super portable thanks to their thin shells, which range from a mere 0.70 inches to 0.72 inches thick. They still include the ports you want, though, with the Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.0, and Displayport bringing more flexibility to your workflow. That includes easily plugging in an additional monitor to create a more complete workstation.

HP EliteBook 735 G5

The HP EliteBook 735 G5 comes with a 13.3-inch FHD display that’s designed with the mobile user in mind. It’s powered by the AMD PRO Ryzen™ Series processor and equipped with Windows 10 Pro. While this model doesn’t come with a preinstalled webcam, it offers compatibility with the HD 720p TripleMic webcam for those looking for video conference capabilities.

HP EliteBook 745 G5

If a larger laptop is a priority, the HP EliteBook 745 G5 is built to impress with a 14-inch FHD display. Users will notice the same exceptional AMD Radeon™ graphics card for precision clarity, in addition to the 745-unique option to upgrade to an SEC fingerprint reader for an even more secure machine.

HP EliteBook 755 G5

If you’re looking for additional security, you may want to upgrade to the HP EliteBook 755 G5 model for additional security with the HP SureView feature. It’s a physical security system that obscures your screen from people walking by, adding an element of privacy sure to entice those working in an open office plan or on-the-go. The HP EliteBook 755 G5 also comes with a numeric keypad, an added bonus for office professionals.

HP EliteBook 800 series laptops

The HP EliteBook 800 series comes with all the features of the HP EliteBook 700 computers, but there are definitely some upgrades. Again, you’re getting an ultra-slim aluminum laptop that comes in the same sizing specifications.
However, the HP EliteBook 840 G5 and HP EliteBook 850 G5 both start with an Intel® Core™ i5 processor and an integrated Intel® UHD Graphics 620 GPU. You can also customize both to have more processing speed and an AMD Radeon™ RX 540 graphics card.

HP EliteBook 840 G5

The HP EliteBook 840 can house up to 32GB of RAM and up to 1TB of super-fast SSD storage. Shoppers also have the option of purchasing an ultra-bright display that offers clarity in any type of environment. That means you can take your computer to the beach, the park, a patch of sun outside your office - all without the blinding glare.
What’s great about the HP EliteBook 840 in particular is that it comes standard with a slew of security features. This includes HP SureView, which prevents any visual hacking from taking place and can stop nosy coworkers from spying on your screen. Additionally, it has a camera shutter, so you don’t need to worry about programs or intruders accessing your webcam.
The HP EliteBook 840 and 850 come equipped with a fingerprint reader and an infrared camera, the latter allowing for authentication via facial recognition. On top of that, customers can triple down on security measures by using the HP Smart Card reader, a security lock that protects your computer in the unfortunate event of loss or theft.
We also made collaborating easier than ever with the world-facing microphone and one-touch keys that enable call features without the hassle. Again, you'll get HP Noise Cancellation, which allows for crisp and clear calls, courtesy of Bang & Olufsen speakers. These speakers also get pretty darn loud, so no more low-volume Spotify sessions - unless that's what you want.

HP EliteBook 850 G5

There are noticeable feature upgrades with the HP EliteBook 850. The most obvious change is the 15.6-inch diagonal FHD touch display. In addition to an upgraded visual experience, we also included 8GB of memory in our top-of-the-line model. Lastly, we added an 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i5 processor for extra speed.
The HP EliteBook 800 series can easily connect to an external monitor to create a desktop experience, too. Make it feel even more like home by using the USB-C™ cable to connect to our portable speaker, the Thunderbolt Dock G2.
So, who is the 800 series for? It can handle demanding software like video editing programs, as well as engineering software. However, its primary use is as a portable solution for executives or higher-level knowledge workers who frequently use their computer to make audio and video calls, and are concerned about the quality of them.

HP EliteBook 1000 series laptops

HP EliteBooks get into the big leagues with the HP EliteBook 1040 and 1050. Both bring even more power to the table than the 700 and 800 series, but still offer that same sleek design and portability to provide flexibility in your workstation.
HP EliteBook 1000 Series Laptops
There are some big differences between the HP EliteBook 1040 and upgraded HP EliteBook 1050. Here's a quick look:

HP EliteBook 1040 G4

The HP EliteBook 1040 is a 14-inch notebook ideal for business power users. It boasts the 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5 processor and has Windows 10 Pro pre installed. It can also be upgraded to 16GB of RAM, 1080p and 4K display options, and up to 1TB SSD storage.
This HP EliteBook comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports that can power a 4K or 5K secondary screen display. There's also an HDMI 1.4 port, but it’s important to know that it doesn’t support 4K+ displays.
The HP EliteBook 1040 allows you to access your computer through biometric login details, meaning either your finger or your face. It also has the HP SureView features of the lower-priced models along with an IR Camera for Windows Hello.
We also added several business-friendly features into the mix. For example, HP Sure Start checks documents for corruption and replaces them if needed, while HP Sure Click provides extra security for internet use.
The newest addition to this feature's lineup is HP PhoneWise. First, you’ll need to download an app to your iPhone or Android phone, and then the app syncs with your computer, so you can text through your keyboard and make calls.

HP EliteBook 1050 G1

The HP EliteBook 1050 G1 is a business-class computer that does much more than help you host conference calls.
HP EliteBook 1050 Laptop
It includes an SD card reader (not available in the 800 series) and ports for USB 3.0, USB Type-C™, and Thunderbolt™. It also holds the honor of being the very first ultra-slim business model with a built-in NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 graphics card, which lets you play as hard as you work.
With the GTX 1050, you can run most of the latest games, although hardcore gamers will want to look into a more specialized gaming laptop like the HP OMEN. Most casual users will be satisfied with their experience even though the card doesn’t allow for 4K gaming.
The HP EliteBook 1050 G1 specs also include an Intel® 8th Generation Quad Core CPU, longer battery (up to 10 hours), next-level Bang & Olufsen audio, and a vibrant FHD display. It has two RAM slots for up to 32GB, in addition to two SSD slots with room for up to 4TB of storage.
As far as security is concerned, you'll get all the Sure-features mentioned in the above models, plus the option to upgrade to the HP Privacy Camera, which protects users from malicious surveillance.

Summary

After looking closely at each level of the HP EliteBook series, it's clear that any of these options are excellent choices for any professional. The 700 series makes sense for students or professionals seeking a laptop that's more dependable than models in lower price ranges, but aren't spending the bulk of their day in CAD programs or other demanding software.
The HP EliteBook 800 series offers some upgrades over its lower cost siblings, particularly with security. If you're handling sensitive data, this may be the choice for you. And at the higher end, the HP EliteBook 1000 series brings the A game. You're getting top-notch graphics and processing power, and up to 4TB of storage - perfect for digital professionals and engineers.
We invite you to look through the specs yourself and see which HP Elite laptop makes the most sense, both for your budget and your style of work.
