What Do You Really Need in Your Carry On?

When you hit the road for business, deciding what technology to bring can be a daunting exercise, while toting along extra gadgets can also be inconvenient and risky. Travellers—from seasoned veterans to rookies—often want to pare down their tech, but certainly not at the expense of productivity.
By identifying the precise needs and goals of a specific trip and leveraging the flexibility of some of the latest tech innovations, business travellers can be efficient and prolific pros wherever they may roam.
So, what tech do you really need in your carry-on?

Your smartphone? Definitely.

In a survey of 300 travellers who took four or more business trips over the previous 12 months, all but two carried a smartphone,[1] while travellers tabbed it as their most indispensable travel item in the recent Expedia/Egencia Mobile Index global study.
After the smartphone, though, deciding what additional tech devices and accessories to pack often gets murky and case-specific.

Pack your tablet if…

Portable, user-friendly, and available on multiple operating systems, tablets are a particularly wise carryon choice for business travellers who:
  • Are looking to minimize weight with a thin and light device capable of addressing tasks such as surfing the web, responding to email, or editing documents
  • Desire a quick-charging, secure solution that can be customized with smart jackets and docking stations
  • Need to utilize mobile apps like Square to accept credit cards, Evernote to sync notes across mobile and desktop devices, or HP ePrint to print from virtually anywhere[2]

Pack your notebook if…

While carting along a notebook PC may feel redundant given the power compact smartphones and tablets wield, the notebook remains a must-have for when you need:
  • A powerful, reliable, and durable PC to run high-performing software, collaborate with a team, and conveniently connect to multiple peripheral devices
  • Expandable memory, battery, and storage space to hold key reports, presentations, photos, or videos
  • Big-screen views, comfortable keyboards, and long battery life
Meanwhile, convertible options—hybrid tablets and notebooks—marry the power of a notebook with the flexibility of a tablet. The HP Spectre Pro x360 convertible boasts up to 16 GB of memory, 512 GB solid-state drive storage, a 13.3-inch touch display, and runs up to 13 hours on a single charge.[3]

The future of business travel?

But could there be a more efficient way to travel? An even greater way to leverage tech flexibility to propel your productivity and efficiency? The HP Elite x3—a next-gen 3-in-1 computing device—allows users to seamlessly switch between a handheld device, a notebook, and a desktop depending on their needs.
When you're on the go, the HP Elite x3 delivers all the functionalities and versatility of a secure mobile device, ranging from Windows 10 Continuum and a high-performance processor, to premium audio and advanced cameras. When you need to work big in an airport lounge, conference room, or coffee shop, the HP Elite x3 connects wirelessly to the HP Elite x3 Lap Dock for a convenient notebook experience. [4]
For years, business travellers were limited to toting a notebook in their carry-on. Today, future-forward mobile devices simplify the lives of employees who spend most of their time working out of non-traditional office settings by providing them with a whole new way of getting things done.
[2] Local printing requires mobile devices and printers to be on the same network or have a direct wireless connection. Wireless performance is dependent on the physical environment and distance from the access point. Wireless operations are compatible with 2.4 GHz operations only. Remote printing requires an Internet connection to an HP web-connected printer. App or software and HP ePrint account registration may also be required.
[3] Windows 10 MM14 battery life will vary depending on various factors including product model, configuration, loaded applications, features, use, wireless functionality, and power management settings. The maximum capacity of the battery will naturally decrease with time and usage. See www.bapco.com for additional details.
