Better patient care matters. Learn about Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.

At Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, HP is helping to make better use of information—with child-saving results.

In hospitals, a child's life can depend on quick, accurate decisions made by doctors and staff. Often they must instantaneously monitor, process and act on huge amounts of highly complex information. And with electronic medical records now standard, finding a way to effectively use an endless patient data stream can mean the difference between life and death.

That's why Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford is tapping into research in analytics from HP Labs to pilot an electronic Patient-Centered Dashboard in its Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The Dashboard replaces the traditional whiteboard (with hand-written patient names, room numbers and responsible staff names) and presents all patient data in one central location.

Busy hospital personnel get all the information they require— including alerts with red, yellow, and green urgency-level lights — in one place, helping to predict patient needs and prevent life-threatening complications. And it reminds staff to replace equipment, alter the type or quantity of medication, or even raise the bed for children on ventilators.

"Through our collaboration with the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, we have been able to develop a technology solution that finds and combines information at risk of being overlooked deep inside electronic medical records, and brings it to the eyes of the entire care team." Said Jaap Suermondt, director of healthcare research at HP Labs. "Ultimately, this allows them to make critical decisions and prevent complications."
