Making data centers more green matters. HP Data Center Services.

The HP Wynyard Data Center takes a green approach to managing a company's most valuable asset—its data.

How do you build a data center that's as green as it is secure? AT HP's Wynyard Data Center, the answer was found by simply looking outside. At 360,000 square feet (large enough to hold eight 747 jumbo jets), the Center is one of the world's greenest large-scale data facility — and features an energy-efficient and sustainable design that incorporates recycled materials, harvested rainwater and the very air we breathe.

Located in Billingham, England, the data center makes extensive use of fresh air instead of refrigeration to lower its energy requirements and keep the servers cool. The source of this key ingredient: cool fresh air from the temperate environment right outside the data center.

"We thought, what can we do differently?" said Ed Kettler, a Fellow and Green IT Strategist at HP Enterprise Services. "First, we can take advantage of Mother Nature instead of trying to fight or reinvent her."

The facility has a series of air handlers that moderate the air to the right temperature and humidity. Then, fans blow the air through the 12-foot-high raised floor to distribute it throughout the server rooms.

Beyond the hardware, a focus on the facility's details helped maximize efficiency. Light-colored server racks were built to reduce the amount of lighting needed, and the lighting itself is reflective and designed to minimize shadows.

So far, the green approach has paid off. Wynyard Data Center uses 40 percent less energy than a more traditional data center, and beat HP's own expectations for efficiency.
